Golden Glory Unisex Sweatshirt

High John the Conqueror is an important figure in southern folk culture. Like Brer Rabbit, he’s depicted as a trickster/shaman figure. As Zora Neale Hurston tells the story, John was an African prince with magical powers. With an unbreakable spirit and unceasing guile, he outsmarted the masters and protected other enslaved folks. He decided to return to Africa but left his spirit in the root of Ipomea Jalapa, a morning glory vine in the same family as sweet potatoes. While generally considered inedible, High John the Conqueror root is commonly used in folk magic and spiritual practices.
